Separate three terms that often overlap

An original painting is the physical surface on which the artist applied paint. Brushwork, texture and small surface variations belong to that object. A reproduction is a printed image made from an existing artwork, commonly using a photograph or scan. Elysian Vibes currently presents original portfolio paintings by Isha Kamal.

There is also a third category: an original print. In printmaking, an artist can create an image through a process such as lithography, woodcut or intaglio, producing multiples that are themselves original works. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes the nineteenth-century L’Estampe Originale portfolio as innovative printmaking even though its works existed as multiples. Therefore, “print” does not automatically mean “copy of a painting.” Ask which process the artist actually used.

Compare the object, not only the image

For a painting, check the medium, surface, dimensions, edge treatment, framing and condition. Look closely at photographs for texture, while remembering that screens cannot fully show scale or surface. For a reproduction, ask about the paper or other substrate, printing method, printed dimensions, border, colour management and whether the artist authorised it. If a listing uses terms such as limited edition, signed or numbered, the listing should state exactly what each term means.

Edition numbers can be relevant to both original prints and reproductions, but a number alone does not identify the process or guarantee quality. The Met’s example records prints numbered within an edition of one hundred and also identifies their techniques and papers. A useful seller description should be similarly specific about the item in front of you. If those details are absent, ask before buying rather than filling the gaps with assumptions. Also confirm whether the displayed dimensions describe the image, the full sheet or a framed object, because these measurements can differ materially.

Choose according to the experience you want

Choose an original painting when the singular painted surface, its texture and its direct connection to the artist’s hand matter most to you. A well-specified reproduction can suit a different budget, scale or room, when one is legitimately offered. An original fine-art print appeals for another reason: printmaking is the artwork’s originating medium. None of these categories is automatically the correct choice, and none should be treated as a guaranteed financial investment. Condition, care and presentation are separate questions worth discussing for the specific work.

Start with the work that holds your attention, then verify what the listing includes. The Elysian Vibes shop lets you explore original works associated with Isha Kamal and enquire where details are not published. If you are deciding between an existing piece and requesting something personal, continue to the guide on commissioned paintings versus ready-made art. That decision concerns process and collaboration, while this one concerns the kind of art object you are buying.
